Safe Community

Safety in our neighbourhoods needs to be addressed. Both supportive programs and further enforcement are key issues our community must focus on. We need to maintain and expand resources for safety in our community.

As your voice, I will actively fight to keep our neighbourhoods safe.

Be mindful of new Ward 1 candidates who may promote positions of supporting community safety without any intent to follow through on the investments required to make it so.

Road and Traffic Safety

The many residents I’ve spoken to at the doors have uniformly expressed concerns for road and traffic safety in our neighbourhoods. From addressing parking related issues, excessive speeding to snow removal, I promise to be your voice for a proactive approach in bringing your concerns to city officials in the most effective way that will yield positive results.

Starwood Speed Bumps2022-10-06T08:18:52-04:00

Starwood Dr Guelph SpeedbumpsI have heard concerns on both sides of the aisle regarding the Traffic Calming Initiative on Starwood Dr. With residents having expressed concerns for excessive speeding over the years, traffic studies were done that merited the Traffic Calming Initiative with the speed bumps that we see today. Most can agree that albeit being effective at slowing down vehicles, they are quite excessive and not a practical long term solution.

As they are scheduled to be removed this Fall, new permanent speed bumps are said to be installed next year that is supposed to be much more manageable. Residents on surrounding roads are seeing their once quiet streets being used as a bypass from Starwood. These excessive speed bumps are in turn creating safety issues elsewhere.

Traffic delineators and 3-way stops at key points can achieve positive and measurable results. It’s more affordable, effective and the many residents I’ve spoken with share the same sentiment. I will be your voice for practical and effective solutions that matters to us – right where we live.

Affordable Community

Decisions have consequences.

Upcoming capital projects decided upon by many on the current council will require the proper oversight for these projects to make them affordable for you. As a business owner, I have the expertise to see these projects come to completion while looking out for the bottom line. Out of control tax increases are hurting our families.

Be mindful of new Ward 1 candidates who may promise you an affordable community, yet make other promises that can only result in more tax increases for you and your family.

Budget Confirmation2022-10-05T22:29:30-04:00

I have been very vocal about out of control tax/budget increases that is not reflective of a sustainable community. Elected Councillors coming into the next term have the opportunity to review one of the highest budget increases in Guelph’s recent history given to us by some on our current council.

As Ward 1 Councillor, I will NOT confirm this 2nd year 5.2% budget (almost +10% combined with the current year) and will opt to find savings where possible to keep taxes low for our families.

I promise I will be one to fight to keep taxes and spending to be reflective of the high inflation and cost of living that our families face today.

Review City Assets2022-10-05T22:29:44-04:00

Fiscal responsibility where our money isn’t wasted, and in turn can be better invested in channels that better serves our community is one primary focus.

I will continue to review city assets to save us citizens money and increase efficiencies where possible (District Energy Systems is a recent example). I feel that there are a lot of bloat that can save Guelphites many millions of dollars that help to relieve the financial burdens on our families, and/or invest in better sustainable programs in our city that benefits our neighbourhoods.

We see many in our current administration who have demonstrated to habitually vote for unsustainable items that in turn have seen some of the highest budget and tax increase in our city’s recent history. This has not resonated with the people in our community. I am dedicated to bringing the residents of Ward 1’s voice to Council for an affordable, safe (and prosperous) community.

$62 Milllion Library + 20 Year Tax Levy2022-10-05T22:30:14-04:00

In a previous vote of 8-5, the $62M library budget was approved. What is concerning is that next year when it goes out to tender, with today’s inflationary cost increases, it’s highly unlikely we’ll see bids coming in within budget.

The South End Recreation Centre is an example, the lowest bid for that project came in at +$41M (+51%) above budget!

When this $62M Library comes back at $90-100M+, that 20 year tax levy will inevitably have to be increased exponentially. It is crucial that we have a unified Council who will respect the voices of Guelphites, stop and review practical options and solutions moving forward.

I will be your voice for fiscal responsibility and all decisions will be respectful of our tax dollars. Out of control taxes are hurting our families.

Are libraries important in our community? Absolutely. There was a version of the central library that didn’t include a 20 Year Tax Levy on Guelphites. That version, in our original ‘hub + satellite branches’ model would more than adequately serve our community, and at the same time be accessible to all.

Caring Community

Throughout the years, I have had the pleasure of leading, fostering and connecting a very generous and caring community. To date, we have been able to greatly assist local individuals and groups such as The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Guelph, United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin, A Little Relief and many more!

Our Caught in Guelph Turkey Drive have been able to bring thousands of pounds of fresh drug-free turkey to hundreds of local families during the holiday seasons. I’m proud to have been able to, and continue to assist countless families and individuals in their time of needs through the collective kindness of our community members. This year we were able to assist 80 families with over 1,200 lbs of turkey, sides, fixings, dessert and more!

I am also pledging the equivalent of $6,034.00 of my received council pay – the amount of the pay raise that council voted to give council coming out of the pandemic – to be donated to local non-profit marginalized groups. I have always felt that this pay raise doesn’t resonate with the people who are struggling today.

I will also bring forth new Code of Conduct policies for all recipients of taxpayer-funded resources, as well as committee members (and their team), to further protect marginalized groups in our community.

Having gotten to know Thai, it’s clear he stands for integrity and understanding. Our city is a better place with Thai in it.

Thai Mac has been so active in the Guelph community! I can speak for myself and my co-admins on A LITTLE RELIEF that you were a huge part of helping us ease burdens for the Guelph community throughout (and prior) to Covid. I wish you all the best in this endeavor!

Jen S-Nelson, A Little Relief

I met this gentleman and had a great conversation with him and I believe we need more like him on our council… I think Thai will make a great representative of Ward 1 and I am encouraging everybody in this ward to vote for Thai.

LET YOUR VOICE COUNTMATTERBE HEARD

Over the years I have engaged daily with tens of thousands of people within our community. I love helping countless individuals, families, organizations and businesses in our city. I welcome passionate discussions on issues that matter to people at a personal level, that affects them and their families.

I have heard from our community how important it is for our councillors to live in the same Ward as the people whom they represent. Our family has lived in our East End Ward 1 for over 20 years. We have seen and experienced firsthand the growth and demands that families in our neighbourhoods require and the lack of attention compared to other parts of our city. I will fight vigorously and relentlessly to get us value for our tax dollars.

On October 24th, vote for Thai Mac and together, we will deliver on making our community affordable and safe for all.
